OBT

Oral Bible Translation

Description

The OBT expands missionary skills: it is not only about translating one word into another language, but about contextualizing God’s Word into each community’s language and culture, so it is better understood and we see how God has revealed Himself in every culture without erasing it.

During the school, real translation work is carried out, because students share the same space with members of the communities whose languages are being translated. The latest edition took place at the Leticia base, with Emberá, Wounaan and Katío facilitators who prepared here and shared with the other students a hands-on experience of what translating the Word means.

What you’ll live in the OBT

Three months to learn how to bring the Word to every language and culture.

  • Real translation, not theory

During the school, real translation work is done with books of the Bible.

  • One shared space with the communities

You share home and classes with members of the peoples whose languages are being translated.

  • Contextualizing the Word

Bringing it into each community’s language and culture without losing its essence.

  • A step after the DTS

The DTS is the gateway: the OBT deepens your missionary path.

How a story is worked

A simple path repeated with each Bible passage.

  1. Step 1

    Listen and understand

The Bible story is studied until it is well understood.

  2. Step 2

Tell it in your own language

A speaker of the language tells it in their own words and way of speaking.

  3. Step 3

    Record it

It is recorded in audio so it can be heard again and again.

  4. Step 4

    Share it with the community

The community listens, checks it and shares it with others.
