OBT

Oral Bible translation: God’s Word in the heart language of every people.

Description

OBT (Oral Bible Translation) seeks to reach communities that do not yet have any translation work. Translating is not swapping one word for another: it is preserving the essence of God’s Word and making it understandable to each people, in their language and culture.

Because many peoples learn by listening and telling, the Word is translated, recorded and shared in audio. The books of Ruth, Jonah and Genesis have already been translated and contextualized in communities such as the Emberá and the Wounaan, and work is now underway with the Katío people. The Amazon already has several translation projects, so the ministry serves mainly communities in northern Colombia.

A Word you can hear

Four ideas that guide all of OBT’s work.

  • Hearing first

Many peoples learn by listening and telling stories; that is why the Bible is shared in audio.

  • Faithful to the text

Translating is not swapping words: it is not losing the essence of God’s Word.

  • Their own voices

Speakers of each language, such as the Emberá, Wounaan and Katío, take part and facilitate the process.

  • For those who have nothing yet

We prioritize communities with no translation work at all.

How the work is progressing

  1. Already done

    Ruth, Jonah and Genesis

Translated and contextualized in communities such as the Emberá and the Wounaan, and recorded in audio.

  2. Under way

    The Katío people

Work is now underway with the Katío so they too can hear the Word in their language.
